here is one, so you know what you are looking at:
Everyone agrees the trains are bad and nobody agrees about why.
Nationalised for forty years and they were not better. Ownership is not the variable.
Depends which line. Some of it is ownership, most of it is that track and trains are run by different people.
Every decision is made on a shorter timescale than the thing it affects. Defer the maintenance, leave before the bill lands.
no likes, no ranking, nothing to win.
create an account or sign in to crib.
There is no book everyone ought to have read, and the list is always suspiciously full of whatever the person making it was assigned at nineteen.
What I actually miss is software that was finished. You bought it, it did the thing, and nobody moved the buttons on a Thursday.
Reading a hard book slowly is not the same activity as reading an easy book slowly, and treating them as one thing is why reading targets are useless. Counting books is like counting meals — the number is accurate and it tells you almost nothing about whether anything was absorbed.
Most political arguments look like disagreements about facts and are really disagreements about what matters. The first kind can be settled. Nobody in history has settled the second by producing a better statistic.
I cannot do a phone call any more and I genuinely do not know when that happened.
Everybody says they want politicians to admit mistakes and everybody punishes the ones who do, and I include myself in that.
Podcasts are radio with the editing taken out and we have agreed to call that intimacy.
Living in a city is greener than living in the countryside, which reliably annoys everyone who moved out for the fresh air.
Ask anyone whether they want the truth from their doctor and they say yes, then go to pieces the moment a doctor is actually blunt with them.
A cricket match that ends in a draw is a better result than most wins and this is the single hardest thing to explain to anyone who did not grow up with it.
Nobody tells you that recovering from something takes about three times longer than the leaflet says, and that the last third is almost entirely boredom.
Health advice aimed at women is still mostly either about being thinner or about having children, and it is genuinely strange how little else there is.
A thing I have noticed after fifteen years of interviewing people: almost every interview process is measuring how comfortable someone is being evaluated, and then reporting that as a measure of how good they are at the job. The tell is that the same candidate performs completely differently depending on the room. Give someone a whiteboard and three strangers and you learn how they handle being watched. Give them a real problem and an afternoon and you learn something about how they think. These correlate weakly, and we have built an entire industry on assuming they correlate strongly. What makes it hard to fix is that the noisy signal is cheap and the good signal is expensive. An hour of whiteboarding costs an hour. A realistic work sample costs a day of the candidate's time and half a day of yours, and multiplied across a funnel that is a real budget line that somebody has to defend. So we keep the cheap test and then add stages to compensate for its noise, which is how a process ends up with six rounds that are each individually indefensible. I do not have a clean answer. I have stopped pretending the current thing measures what we say it measures.
Voting for the least bad option is not cynicism, it is the entire mechanism working as designed, and I have got tired of being told otherwise.
Every popular fact you know about the brain is either wrong or from 1985. The ten percent thing, left brain right brain, learning styles, all of it, still being taught by people who mean well.
Nobody prepares you for the phone call where your parent becomes the person who needs looking after. It does not arrive as a diagnosis. It arrives as a series of small things you decide individually not to worry about — a missed bill, the same story twice, a car with a scrape nobody mentions. Each one is fine. You notice the pattern about eight months after it started. What I was not ready for is that there is no moment where anybody tells you it has changed. No appointment, no letter. You simply find yourself doing more of the phoning and more of the deciding, and one day you realise the direction reversed some time ago and nobody said. The practical stuff I could handle. What I could not was that he knew too, and was managing it, and that both of us spent about a year protecting the other from a conversation we were separately already having.
First past the post keeps producing governments that most people voted against, and we keep describing this as stability.
Test cricket is the only sport where the boring bit is the point and I will not be taking questions.
Football has too much football now.
Nobody plays anything until it goes dark any more and I cannot work out whether that is the traffic, the phones, or the parents.
Getting a GP appointment has become a competitive sport and the people who are worst at sport are the ones who need it most.
You can love the work of someone appalling. I have never once met a person who manages it consistently, but in principle you can.
A pay rise disappears in about four months and nobody warns you. You adjust, the new number becomes normal, and you are back where you started with a bigger flat.
A university degree is now mostly a signal about who your parents were, and only incidentally about what you know. The tell is that employers screen on institution rather than transcript, and institution is set by admissions, which is set by schooling, which is set by money.
Won on the science, lost on the sequencing: almost nobody disputes the physics any more, and almost everybody disputes who pays first. Which means another decade spent explaining the greenhouse effect is a decade spent answering a question that stopped being asked.
something you reckon. a gripe, a hunch, a hill you will die on. serious or not.
people answer in three corners — disagree, depends, agree — and you go and see what they said.
anyone can join with an email address. it is used to send you a code and nothing else.
what all this does to your head, and what to do about it.
