Why cribate
What the other places did to us, and what this one refuses to do.
cribate exists because of one bet: that most of what is wrong with social media is not the people on it. It is the machinery around them.
Nobody set out to build a machine for confirmation bias. It is simply what you get when you optimise for time spent and let it run for a decade.
The feed learned to agree with you
Every large platform found the same thing — show someone more of what they already nod along to, and they stay longer. The result is that millions of people experience a narrow slice of opinion as though it were the whole world, and find genuine disagreement not just unwelcome but strange.
The feed here does not learn. It is shuffled, filtered by topic rather than by you, and the three answers to any crib are shown one at a time in an order that changes per person, so there is no winning side to arrive at.
The interface learned to shout
Counts, badges, streaks, autoplay, infinite scroll, a red dot that means nothing in particular. Each is individually defensible. Together they produce a state that is not quite attention and not quite rest, and it is very hard to think carefully in it — which is inconvenient, because thinking carefully is the whole of what we are asking you to do.
One number, and why it is exact
Two things here carry a number. Views are banded, because a view is not an achievement and an exact one only invites comparison. Followers will be exact, because a follow is a real relationship and pretending not to know how many would be coy rather than principled.
And one thing is counted precisely on purpose: how many people a response changed the mind of. Every other platform counts agreement, which is why they all reward saying the expected thing to the room you are already in. This counts the opposite, and it can only be given by somebody admitting they were wrong.
Nothing is ordered by it. Responses still appear least-read-first, the three corners are still identical, and a persuasive answer does not float to the top. The number is shown; nothing moves because of it. If that ever stops being true, this has become a scoreboard and the argument on this page is lost.
Nobody is ranked
The three answers to a crib are chromatically identical and unordered. Responses are shown least-read-first, so the newest voice is not buried under the loudest one. There is no karma, no reputation, no standing to accumulate.
The moment a place lets you build a position, it gives you a reason to defend it rather than change your mind.
What we are actually asking
Not that you be nicer. Not that you be correct. Only that you notice how you are consuming what you consume — that you meet a crib before you meet the argument for it, that you hear the strongest version of the other side before you compose your own, and that you occasionally leave a page having changed your mind slightly and told nobody.
Whether any of this reverses the damage is genuinely unknown. It is a small platform run by people who could be wrong about most of it. That is roughly the point: it is a crib, stated plainly, and you are invited to disagree.
