Voting for the least bad option is not cynicism, it is the entire mechanism working as designed, and I have got tired of being told otherwise.

Democratic systems have experimented with several types of voting mechanisms. If people's preferences remained same, the different mechanisms would still give different outcomes.
An election is not a values statement, it is a decision about who runs things for four years. Treating the ballot as self-expression is how you end up with the option you liked least.
