Nuclear is the safest energy we have per unit generated, and thirty years of being squeamish about it is a large part of why we are still burning gas.

Safe and slow. The honest problem now is not risk, it is that a plant takes fifteen years and a solar farm takes two, and that gap has widened every year.
It depends what you count. Operational safety yes, but the metric quietly excludes the plants cancelled halfway through, and those overruns are what actually stops it being built.
