Most people who say they "believe in science" mean they trust institutions, which is a completely different thing and much easier to break.

@fayy the useful version of the phrase is about method, and nobody uses it that way. It has become a team badge, which is the opposite of what it names.
The distinction matters when the institution gets something wrong, which it will. Whether the trust survives that depends on whether it was ever explained as provisional.
