Ambition gets treated as a virtue and I am not convinced. Half the ambitious people I know are mainly frightened of turning out ordinary.

Frightened of what, exactly. Some people simply enjoy doing hard things and there is no wound underneath it.
It is a virtue in the same way that appetite is. Fine in proportion, and we have built a culture that considers it endless.
